I am sure this thought has been shared elsewhere on the Internet, but a thought just hit me today. I never claimed to be a genius, but I feel like this thought should have crossed my mind long ago. I saw an article on a technology news site about delivery robots. This particular one in the article was ground based. Amazon and others have been considering flying drones for delivery. When I saw this drone gliding across the ground, the thought occurred to me that a criminally minded individual could just pick it up and haul it off.
My next thought was how much smarter it would be to keep the drones in the air for delivery purposes, but then that still has issues. You can shoot a drone down, capture it with a larger drone, or scramble its guidance system or feed. I have to be honest and say that I have been excited about the idea of using drones for delivery and this revelation has really depressed me. I am sure the smart engineers at Amazon have considered these issues already and are creating protective measures, hopefully.
As I followed this thought trail of autonomous delivery systems and security, it excites me to think of the innovations that will come along with such technology. I think of things like tracking systems, beyond RFID. I also consider tech such as physical security mechanisms to deter theft. It will be interesting to see how this area of technology evolves in the coming years. I would love to see my packages autonomously delivered in the watchful protection of some fully armed escort drones waiting to take out anyone or anything that might attempt an intercept. I don’t see this being an actual option.
