Travis Weaver to Give Away Bitcoin for Christmas

Travis Weaver on Twitter: “Bought 1,500 bitcoin in 2011 for $2.87 each. I will pick 5 random people who retweet this and give one to each of you. Merry Christmas.

Well, it appears that one Travis Weaver (@TravWeav) has lost his mind over the holiday season and Bitcoin’s latest price surge.  Bitcoin is currently trading at just shy of $19,000 USD at the moment.  It is clear that this stunt has driven up the activity on his tweet, and his Twitter profile.  The question is, will he do it.  At the price he paid for the coins, he is really only giving away $15 total, but the value of 5 coins is roughly $100,000 and could be higher by the time he makes the transaction.  It will be interesting to see if the holiday spirit moves Travis to hold true to his promise and deliver some holiday cheer to some of his Twitter fan, new and old.

Full disclosure:  Yes, I did retweet!

  1. Ha. He can give me some dough. You think this guy is serious? No one is giving away $80-$90Gs for nothing. He’s getting some publicity, but I don’t think this is for real.

  2. If Travis is really going to follow through, then he is nuts. On the tweet, people are commenting and asking for proof that he has the coin and could actually give this much away. FYI, he says he is drawing tomorrow at 6PM. I didn’t catch the time zone. I guess we’ll know tomorrow. 🙂

    1. Actually, it turns out that Travis never intended to follow through. The Verge did an interview with him on the 8th of December where he admired that he did not own Bitcoin and was doing a social experiment.
